Post Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery patients often lose dramatic amounts of weight; two thirds
to three quarters of their excess weight is not unusual. Such significant weight
loss in a short period of time can result in hanging excess skin. The outer skin
sometimes does not retain the elastic qualities needed to “shrink back down” to
the body’s new shape. Coastal Center for Obesity patients can choose from
several procedures to reshape the tummy, arms, legs and thighs. Procedures
including circumferential body lifts, abdominoplasty, arm and leg lifts are
available.
Procedures
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a "tummy tuck," is a major surgical
procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to
tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce
the appearance of a protruding abdomen, which depending on the extent of the
original problem and the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to
hip.
Abdominoplasty can also be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from
pregnancy, although results from the procedure will diminish if they continue to
bear children. Partial and complete tummy tucks are performed on an outpatient
basis and can be done under general anesthesia. Complete abdominoplasty usually
takes two to five hours, while partial abdominoplasty may take an hour or two. Recovery
time usually ranges from two to four weeks. With a balanced diet and regular
exercise, results are long-lasting. Abdominoplasty will likely leave a permanent
scar stretching between the hips, although it should be low enough for even a
bikini to conceal it.
Body Lift
An integral treatment for
the bariatric patient, used to achieve satisfactory results in the lower body
by removing excess skin after weight loss. In this
surgery we enhance the abdomen dramatically. The back is tonified with
liposuction and by removing extra skin. All these allow a drastic lifting of the
tight and butt skin contouring the muscles with the most advanced and up-to-date
techniques.
The Lower Body Lift is the most frequent operation after Bariatric Surgery, this
procedure serves three main purposes:
1. To remove excess fat.
2. To remove excess skin above and beneath the umbilicus.
3. To repair over-distended muscles resulting from pregnancy or excess pressure
put on the muscles by body fat before weight loss.
The scar resulting from the abdominoplasty is situated very low, just above the
pubis, extending slightly on either side , and can be hidden in a swimsuit or
underwear.
A Full Body Lift involves the abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs being lifted
all at the same time. The scar is placed low enough to allow it to be hidden by
a swimsuit. The results are very spectacular.
